Meeropol, his wife, and black vocalist Laura Duncan performed it at Madison Square Garden. Other reports say that Robert Gordon, who was directing Billie Holiday's show at Cafe Society, heard the song at Madison Square Garden and introduced it to her. She said that singing it made her fearful of retaliation but, because its imagery reminded her of her father, she continued to sing the piece, making it a regular part of her live performances. Columbia gave Holiday a one- session release from her contract so she could record it; Frankie Newton's eight- piece Cafe Society Band was used for the session. Because Gabler worried the song was too short, he asked pianist Sonny White to improvise an introduction. On the recording, Holiday starts singing after 7. The song was highly regarded; the 1. In a nutshell, my problem with this film is that the entire plot is revealed in the first five minutes with nothing else to show for it. Of course, this was not understood as the film unfolds, so the rest of the hour and a half you're anticipating that something significant, or even interesting, is about to happen, and it never does. Only when the credits start rolling does it become clear that you just wasted an hour and a half of your life. I'm quite certain that I've invested more emotional capital in this film writing this review than anyone involved in making it. In their first World Cup finals the Irish had progressed into the knockout stages from Group F at Italia 9. Courtesy of three draws with England, Egypt, and Holland, and the lottery of drawn lots Ireland lined up to play Romania in the last 1. World Cup. The date was the 2. June 1. 99. 0 and the venue was Stadio Luigi Farraris. While Ireland had avoided the mighty West Germans the match against the technically gifted Romanians, including talismanic Gheorghe Hagi, would prove to be anything but easy. Yet again neither side could find the elusive winning goal and the Irish players now faced into their first ever penalty shoot- out at a major football championship. Kevin Sheedy was the first Irish penalty taker and he smashed it down the middle of the goal as Romanian keeper Silviu Lung dived to his left. Each of the following six penalties were successfully converted although Ireland were lucky with the fourth penalty. Big forward Tony Cascarino slightly scuffed his shot along the ground almost straight at Lung who really should have saved the shot. The last penalty for Romania was taken by Daniel Timofte, of Dynamo Bucharest, who had only come on as an extra time substitute. Planet World Cup - A guide to everything about the soccer World Cup. The Confederation of African Football's Preliminary Competition offers five berths at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia As he waslining to take the penalty Irish goalkeeper Packie Bonner was cursing his luck. He had come very close to saving Romania's previous penalty from Lupescu and he had guessed the right way for every penalty so far. Timofte took a short run up and drove the ball to Bonner's right. Unfortunately for the Romanian he hit the ball too close to the Donegalman who dived the right way yet again pulling off a vital and historic save. A Nation Breathes a Sigh of Relief and Joy. To the dismay of a nation veteran centre- half David O'Leary stepped forward to take the final Irish penalty. O'Leary had previously experienced some difficulties with the Irish football manager, Jack Charlton, when he refused to break off from his family holiday after he was a late call- up for a minor tournament in Iceland in 1. He hadn't featured in any of the earlier group matches at Italia 9. Steve Staunton. No- one could remember O'Leary ever taking a competitive penalty in the past and now, after just 2. Italia 9. 0, the hopes of Charlton, his team mates, and every Irish football fan rested on his shoulders. O'Leary seemed to take an age to place the ball on the penalty spot, including the referee insisting that he re- spot the ball, adding further to the almost unbearable tension. He struck the ball with his instep to Lung's left as the hapless goalkeeper went to his right. The back of the Romanian net bulged leading to frenzied celebrations amongst the Irish squad, the Irish fans in the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, and all Irish sports fans across the Globe. The remaining place was decided by a play- off between a CONMEBOL team and a team from the OFC (Oceania). Both Mexico and Chile were disqualified during the qualification process; the former for fielding an overage player in a prior youth tournament. Chile were also banned from the 1. Twelve stadiums were selected to host the World Cup matches in twelve different cities. The Stadio San Nicola in Bari and Turin's Stadio delle Alpi were completely new venues opened for the World Cup. The remaining ten venues all underwent extensive programmes of improvements in preparation for the tournament, forcing many of the club tenants of the stadia to move to temporary homes. Additional seating and roofs were added to most stadia, with further redevelopments seeing running tracks removed and new pitches laid. Due to structural constraints, several of the existing stadia had to be virtually rebuilt to implement the changes required. Like Espana '8. 2, the group stage of this tournament was organized in such a way where specific groups only played in two cities close in proximity to each other. Group A only played in Rome and Florence (Hosts Italy played all their competitive matches in Rome, except for their semi- final match), Group B played their matches in Naples and Bari (except for Argentina vs. Cameroon, which was the opening match of the tournament, played in Milan), Group C played their matches in Turin and Genoa, Group D played all their matches in Milan and Bologna, Group E played only in Udine and Verona, and Group F played on the island cities of Cagliari and Palermo. The cities that hosted the most World Cup matches were the 2 biggest cities in Italy: Rome and Milan, each hosting 6 matches, and Bari, Naples, and Turin each hosted 5 matches. Cagliari, Udine and Palermo were the only cities of the 1. The England national team, at the British government's request, were forced to play all their matches in Cagliari. Hooliganism, rife in English football in the 1. European continent . Thanks largely to British Sports Minister Peter Moniyhan's negative remarks about English fans weeks before the match, security around Cagliari during England's three matches there was extremely heavy . Referees dressed only in traditional black jerseys for the final time at a World Cup (a red change shirt was used for two Group C games in which Scotland wore their navy blue shirts). Seedings. Six of the final eight in 1. FIFA opted to seed England ahead of Spain. Spain had only been eliminated in 1. England had been defeated in 9. England ending up ahead of Spain, but Spain had also appeared in the 1. England had failed to qualify. So they invented this formula. England merited the sixth position. This is in no way a concession to English hooliganism. The only stipulation of the draw was that no group could feature two South American teams. The format of the 1. The top two teams and four best third- place finishers from the six groups advanced to the knockout stage, which eliminated the teams until a winner emerged. In total, 5. 2 games were played. Negative tactics. In the knockout stage, many teams played defensively for 1. Two exceptions were the eventual champions West Germany and hosts Italy, the only teams to win three of their four knockout matches in normal time. There were four penalty shoot- outs, a record subsequently equalled in the 2. Eight matches went to extra time, a record equalled in the 2. Ireland and Argentina were prime examples of this trend of cautious defensive play; the Irish scored just twice in five games in drawing all their matches until their defeat to Italy in the quarter- finals. Losing finalists Argentina, meanwhile, scored only five goals in the entire tournament (a record low for a finalist). Argentina also became the first (and so far only) team to advance twice on penalty shoot- outs and the first team to fail to score and have a player sent off in a World Cup final. Largely as a result of this trend FIFA introduced the back- pass rule in time for the 1. Three, rather than two points would be awarded for victories at future tournaments to help further encourage attacking play. Emergence of Cameroon. They opened the tournament with a shock victory over reigning champions Argentina, before topping the group ahead of both them and European Championship runners- up the Soviet Union. Their success was fired by the goals of Roger Milla, a 3. Cameroonian President Paul Biya. Milla's four goals and flamboyant goal celebrations made him one of the tournament's biggest stars as well as taking Cameroon to the last eight. Most of Cameroon's squad was made up of players who played in France's premier football league, Ligue 1- French is one of the officially spoken languages in Cameroon, it being a former French territory. In reaching this stage, they had gone further than any African nation had ever managed in a World Cup before; a feat only equalled twice since (by Senegal in 2. Ghana in 2. 01. 0). Their success was African football's biggest yet on the world stage, and FIFA subsequently decided to allocate the CAF qualifying zone an additional place for the next World Cup tournament. All- champion final four. After the 1. 97. 0 tournament, this is only the second time in the history of the World Cup this has occurred. The teams which finished first, second and third had also contested both the two previous World Cup Finals between themselves. Results. Each group was a round- robin of six games, where each team played one match against each of the other teams in the same group. Teams were awarded two points for a win, one point for a draw and none for a defeat. The teams coming first and second in each group qualified for the Round of 1. The four best third- placed teams would also advance to the next stage. If teams were level on points, they were ranked on the following criteria in order: Greatest total goal difference in the three group matches. Greatest number of goals scored in the three group matches. If teams remained level after those criteria, a mini- group would be formed from those teams, who would be ranked on. Most points earned in matches against other teams in the tie. Greatest goal difference in matches against other teams in the tie. The Czechoslovaks ended runners- up in the group, while the USA's first appearance in a World Cup Finals since 1. Group B. Belgium won their first two games against South Korea and Uruguay to ensure their progress; Uruguay's advance to the second round came with an injury time winner against South Korea to edge them through as the weakest of the third- placed sides to remain in the tournament. Owen believed the Omanis to be the worst slavers, and he got the Mazrui to promise to abolish the slave trade at Mombasa. They wanted control over Pemba, and Owen took Mbaruk with him to Pemba; but Owen merely asked them to respect the rights of those from Mombasa. He went to Zanzibar and persuaded its Governor Abdullah to release the two imprisoned chiefs from Mogadishu. In 1. 82. 6 a Mazrui council at Mombasa decided they had not ceded Fort Jesus to the British and that the agreement was nullified because they had not been given control over Pemba. British Captain Arland then ordered his troops to evacuate Mombasa. The Mazrui capitulated to Sayyid Sa’id and signed a peace treaty in January 1. Sa’id quickly broke his word by installing his men in Fort Jesus. Mogadishu refused to submit and was sacked by the Omani navy. Sa’id ordered Pemba’s Governor Nasir bin Sultan, an old enemy of the Masrui, to become governor of Mombasa. The Masrui revolted against this second violation of the treaty and besieged the fort for three months until the starving garrison surrendered. Nasir was imprisoned; but when the Omani fleet arrived, the Masrui cut his throat. Mombasa’s Shaykh Salim bin Ahmed (r. Omanis in the fort. Yet Sa’id kept attacking Mombasa. After Salim died in 1. Rashid seized Fort Jesus; but his opponents held the town. Some of the Mazrui, disgusted with this conflict, called in Sa’id; but Rashid refused Sa’id’s offers to leave. Sa’id sent his son Khalid to invite the Mazrui and then treacherously arrest them. Thus in 1. 83. 7 the leaders of the Mazrui family were deported, and all died in prison. After Pate revolted in 1. Jairam Sewji for twenty years, and the customs master Taria Topan dominated Zanzibar after Sa’id’s death. Because Sa’id got rid of their Mazrui rulers, Pemba paid his taxes and accepted an Arab garrison. Sa’id tried to conquer independent Siu, which was ruled by Matata bin Mbaraka; but after five expeditions Sa’id gave up in 1. Hamad bin Ahmad and 3. Two years later Sa’id sent a judge from Zanzibar to negotiate peace with the Sultan of Pate, and the 5% customs duties on exports and imports were reinstated. Sa’id generally tried to preserve peace so that he could collect these duties. After a French adventurer named Maisan was murdered by brigands in the interior in 1. French officials pressured the reluctant Sa’id to send some Baluchi soldiers to kill and ruin villages in revenge. That year the British consul Atkins Hamerton persuaded Sa’id to sign a treaty banning exportation of slaves from his African dominions or importation into his Asian possessions. Yet after 1. 85. 0 Hamerton estimated that about 4. Zanzibar and Pemba. Sa’id’s economic policy simplified customs to a 5% duty on all imports, produced most of the world’s cloves on Zanzibar, promoted the caravan trade in Africa, welcomed trade with Europeans, and encouraged Indians to handle business in Zanzibar. Between 1. 83. 0 and his death in 1. Sa’id multiplied his African revenue ten- fold. Johann Krapf landed on Zanzibar in 1. Sa’id. He was the first Christian missionary to explore the interior of Kenya and observed that the Masai were dangerous. Krapf visited Shambaa’s (Usambara) ruler Kimweri ye Nyumbai (r. Vuga in 1. 84. 8 and 1. Mount Kilimanjaro contained a half million people. Kimweri was a very effective autocrat and made detailed arrangements for the hospitality of strangers. After Kimweri died, the Shambaa kingdom broke apart. The fighting between the tribes allowed thousands of captives to be sold as slaves in Pangani. The Masai engaged in another series of wars between 1. They raided the cattle of their Bantu and Nilo- Hamite neighbors who retreated into the forest and steep hillsides. East Africa and the British 1. When Sa’id died in 1. Majid succeeded him in Zanzibar and was supported by the British in his conflict with his brother Thuwain, who ruled at Muscat and tried to take over Zanzibar in 1. British man- of- war persuaded him to turn back. In 1. 86. 1 a man- of- war helped suppress the pirates ravaging Zanzibar. That year the British granted the right to hire Indian “coolies.” Also in 1. Governor- General Canning of India arbitrated the Omani succession dispute by deciding they should rule their separate realms, and Majid should pay Thuwain 4. France accepted the agreement the next year. In 1. 86. 1 Ahmad ibn Fumuloti, who was called Simba (Lion), joined with Mutaka ibn Mbaraka and led a revolt that destroyed the Busa’idi fort at Siu; but Majid led the expedition that restored order and rebuilt the fort. Majid stopped paying the tribute to Thuwain in 1. Thuwain was murdered by his son Salim, though for two more years it was sent to the Governor of Bombay. In 1. 86. 6 two sons of Mutaka were arrested while on an embassy to Zanzibar and soon died in the prison at Mombasa. Despite agreements, in the 1. Zanzibar and Pemba were absorbing about 1. Kilwa declined as its slave trade diminished, and it was devastated by epidemics in 1. Captain Owen observed that the slave trade also ruined the economy around Mozambique. In 1. 87. 3 the British agent John Kirk by threatening to blockade Zanzibar got Sayyid Barghash ibn Sa’id (r. In 1. 87. 5 Sayyid Barghash visited Queen Victoria in England, and in 1. Riots broke out in Mombasa against the freed- slave work of the missions, and at Kilwa slave- traders hid 6,0. Kirk persuaded Barghash to raise an army, and in 1. Lt. William Lloyd Mathews was appointed to drill the recruits. Slave- trading continued until the Sultan put the Governor of Kilwa in prison. Kirk estimated that during the 1. Juba River into Somaliland. As the slave trade declined, the export of rubber, cloves, and ivory greatly increased. Also in 1. 87. 7 the Eastern Telegraph Company connected Zanzibar to Aden by cable. In 1. 87. 5 Bishop Edward Steere traveled from Lindi into the Nyasa country, and two years later he opened missions at Masasi and Newala. It constitutes a mountainous area in the extreme northeastern part of the country and is bordered by the kingdom of Bhutan to the west, the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north, Myanmar (Burma) and the Indian state of Nagaland to the south and southeast, and the Indian state of Assam to the south and southwest. The capital is Itanagar. Arunachal Pradesh, meaning “Land of the Rising Sun,” long has been a recognized region of the Indian subcontinent, receiving mention in such ancient Hindu literature as the Kalika- purana and the epic poems Mahabharata and Ramayana. Formerly known as the North East Frontier Agency (from the British colonial era), the area was part of Assam until it was made the Indian union territory of Arunachal Pradesh in 1. Indian state. The region, however, has been the subject of an ongoing sovereignty dispute between India and China. Area 3. 2,3. 33 square miles (8. The state encompasses three broad physiographic regions. Farthest south is a series of foothills, similar in type to the Siwalik Range (a narrow sub- Himalayan belt stretching across much of northern India), that ascend from the Assam plains to elevations of 1,0. Those hills rise rapidly northward to the Lesser Himalayas, where some ridges and spurs reach 1. Farther north, along the Tibetan border, lie the main ranges of the Great Himalayas, where Kangto, the highest peak in the state, dominates the landscape, reaching about 2. Drainage and soils. The major rivers of the state are the Brahmaputra and its tributaries—the Dibang . The Brahmaputra (known as the Tsangpo in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China and as the Dihang . The river then winds its way southward across the length of the state, cutting a narrow, steep- sided gorge into the mountainous terrain. The Brahmaputra finally emerges onto the northern edge of the Assam plains—a finger of which extends into southeastern Arunachal Pradesh—near the town of Pasighat. It is joined by the Dibang and the Lohit rivers a short distance beyond Pasighat, just south of the border between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. West of the Brahmaputra, the Subansiri is the only tributary to cross the main Himalayan ranges. The Kameng and other rivers in the area rise on the southern flanks of the mountains. The Tirap River drains the southeastern part of the state. Soils vary considerably with terrain. Generally, however, they are acidic and, in mountainous areas, subject to erosion. The major soil types are inceptisols, entisols, and ultisols. River valleys are characterized by rich alluvial soils that are highly suited for agriculture. Climate. The climate of Arunachal Pradesh varies with topography and elevation. The foothill zone is subtropical and has a hot and humid climate; in the lower valleys, summer temperatures in June, July, and August typically rise into the mid- 9. F (mid- 3. 0s C), while winter high temperatures in December, January, and February usually reach the mid- 5. F (about 1. 3 . Average temperatures decrease as elevations increase in the mountains. Test Your Knowledge. Gandhi and Indian History. Precipitation in the state generally follows the wet- dry monsoon pattern. Annual totals average about 1. April and September during the wet southwest monsoon. In the centre of the state, however, the precipitation figure approaches 1. Plant and animal life. Arunachal Pradesh’s diverse terrain, climate, and soils are reflected in its fauna and flora. About two- thirds of the state is forested, with a wide belt of swampy rainforest lying along the foothills. Forests of tropical evergreens and subtropical pines (as well as subtropical mixed broad- leaved and pine forests) are found in lower elevations. As elevation increases, the woodlands give way to mixed and coniferous temperate forests. Subalpine and alpine vegetation, with rhododendrons predominating, appears on the higher slopes. A great variety of medicinal plants, including ginseng and yew, also grow in Arunachal Pradesh, and they are used by much of the population for the treatment and cure of various ailments. Animal life includes tigers, clouded and snow leopards, elephants, wild buffalo, serow and goral goats, many species of deer, and primates such as hoolock gibbons, slow lorises, macaques, and capped langurs. Animals found at higher elevations include bharals (wild sheep), black bears, and red pandas. The rare musk deer and takin (Budorcas taxicolor) also are found in the state. Moreover, Arunachal Pradesh has an abundance of fish, many varieties of snakes, and hundreds of species of birds. People. Arunachal Pradesh is home to dozens of distinct ethnic groups, most of which are in some ways related to the peoples of Tibet and the hill region of western Myanmar. More than two- thirds of the state’s people are designated officially as Scheduled Tribes, a term that generally applies to indigenous peoples who fall outside of the prevailing Indian social structure. In western Arunachal Pradesh the Nissi (Nishi or Dafla), Sherdukpen, Aka, Monpa, Apa Tani, and Hill Miri are among the main tribes. The Adi, who constitute the largest tribal group in the state, live in the central region. The Mishmi inhabit the northeastern hills, and the Wancho, Nocte, and Tangsa are concentrated in the southeastern district of Tirap. Throughout the state, the tribal peoples generally share similar rural lifestyles and occupations; many are subsistence farmers who supplement their diet by hunting, fishing, and gathering forest products. Dispersed villages and isolated farmsteads are typical features of the landscape. Aside from the Scheduled Tribes, much of the remainder of the population of Arunachal Pradesh consists of immigrants from Bangladesh, as well as from Assam, Nagaland, and other states of India. The tribal groups speak about 5. Tibeto- Burman branch of the Sino- Tibetan language family. They are often mutually unintelligible; thus, Assamese and Hindi, both of which are Indo- Aryan languages, as well as English are used as lingua francas in the region. Each of the tribes follows its own social, cultural, and religious practices, and most are endogamous (marrying within the group). Many of the groups practice local religions that involve interaction with various spirits and deities of nature. Ritual sacrifice is common, and a domesticated gaur (wild ox), locally known as a mithun, is especially valued as a sacrificial animal. Some residents of Arunachal Pradesh practice Hinduism, especially those near the lowlands approaching the border with Assam. Tibetan Buddhism is found among groups near the Tibetan border, and some tribes along the Myanmar border practice Theravada. Buddhism, which is predominant in Southeast Asia. Arunachal Pradesh has the lowest population density of any state in India. Most of the populace is concentrated in the low- lying valleys, with the hill peoples living in scattered upland communities. There are no cities and fewer than two dozen towns. Itanagar, in the southwest of Arunachal Pradesh, is the state’s largest town. Economy. Agriculture and forestry. More than half of the population of Arunachal Pradesh is engaged in agriculture, but only a tiny portion of the land is under cultivation. Although settled agriculture, including wet- rice farming, has expanded considerably since the late 2. Rice, corn (maize), millet, and buckwheat are among the chief crops grown by that method. Major commercial crops include oilseeds, potatoes, ginger, sugarcane, and vegetables. Britannica Lists & Quizzes. Mithuns are widely kept, and yaks are important in the higher elevations. Some groups also raise fish through aquaculture. Arunachal Pradesh, with its abundance of forest cover, once derived a significant portion of its gross state product from logging and forestry. Production has dropped dramatically since the 1. In the early 2. 1st century, forestry supported just a few local industries of small or moderate size. Resources and power. Arunachal Pradesh has significant, though largely unutilized, resource potential. Among its resources for generating energy are rivers, coal, and petroleum; most of the state’s power is provided by hydroelectric plants. In addition to hydrocarbons, other mineral resources of Arunachal Pradesh include dolomite, quartzite, limestone, and marble. Efforts have been made in the early 2. Manufacturing. The state’s manufacturing sector consists primarily of medium- and small- scale industries. Basketry, weaving, and carpets are the main handicraft manufactures. Smaller- scale industries include rice and vegetable- oil milling, fruit processing, the manufacture of forest- based products, and steel fabrication. Sericulture (raw silk production) also is important, and the state produces many varieties of silk yarns. Industrial expansion has been encouraged by the state’s economic development policies, and industrial estates have been established at Itanagar and neighbouring Naharlagun (formerly Old Itanagar), as well as at Pasighat and Deomali. Transportation and telecommunications. The state’s rugged terrain makes transport and communications extremely difficult. With few paved roads and, for a long time, no railways in Arunachal Pradesh, links with the rest of India are limited. However, there long has been an active trade network within the region, with footpaths connecting villages at different elevations. Most of the major transportation centres serving Arunachal Pradesh are in the neighbouring state of Assam; among those are the nearest airport, near Lilabari, and the nearest railhead is in Harmoti (or Harmuty). However, in 2. 01. Harmoti and Naharlagun. State- owned and private companies operate regular bus service from Itanagar to various towns of Assam, including Guwahati, Tezpur, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, and Jorhat. Service also is available to Shillong in Meghalaya. Telecommunications were long largely undeveloped in the state, with landline telephone service limited mainly to the larger towns. Although basic telephone access has improved since 2.
